As the year comes to a close, we at the Restorative and Transformative Justice (RTJ) Hub are reflecting on the power of community and the values that unite us. This week, we proudly join our neighbors, partners, and families in celebrating Kwanzaa, a vibrant cultural tradition that uplifts African heritage and community strength.
Kwanzaa, created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, is rooted in seven principles known as the Nguzo Saba. Each principle reflects a pillar of community and personal growth, guiding us to live with intention and purpose. The first principle, Umoja (Unity), calls for unity within our families, communities, and nation—a value that resonates deeply with the mission of The Hub.
The Hub’s Commitment to Umoja and Ujima
This Kwanzaa season, The Hub is embracing Umoja and Ujima through collaboration, shared celebrations, and restorative practices that strengthen bonds within the Trenton community. Earlier this week, we gathered at Trenton City Hall with the Smith Family Foundation to witness the ceremonial lighting of the Kinara. It was a beautiful moment of togetherness and cultural pride, reminding us of the importance of collective strength.
Looking ahead, The Hub team is honored to join the Smith Family Foundation’s Kwanzaa event this Saturday. We are eager to share space with community leaders, youth groups, and families as we reflect on the principles of Kwanzaa and their connection to our work in restorative justice.
The Umoja Circle: Building Community for the New Year
As part of our ongoing commitment to fostering community healing and growth, we are excited to host a series of restorative events and gatherings during Peace Week in January 2025, including, The Umoja Circle. This circle will serve as a safe and empowering space for dialogue, reflection, and connection, bringing together diverse leadership voices to share their experiences and hopes for the new year.
We invite all members of the Trenton community to join us as we continue to honor Ujima and the principles of Kwanzaa, not just during the holidays, but throughout the year, by referring youth to The Hub and/or supporting our intentionally curated events and gathering opportunities. Together, we can build a more united and restorative community.
A Restorative Reminder for the Holidays
The holidays leading into the new year can be a busy and sometimes stressful time for many of us. As you celebrate Kwanzaa and other traditions with your loved ones, remember to take moments to reflect, connect, and restore. If you need inspiration, check out our list of 5 Restorative Tips for Managing Stress During the Holidays, for practical ways to center yourself and embrace the joy of the season with tools to live by all year long.
From all of us at Creative Change Counseling, we wish you a joyous and meaningful Kwanzaa. May the principles of Umoja, Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), and the rest of the Nguzo Saba inspire us all to live boldly, restored, and united.
Heri za Kwanzaa! Happy Kwanzaa!
Stay tuned for more updates and join us at The Hub to celebrate community, healing, and transformation.
